Custom Patio vs. Deck

Are you on the fence about choosing between a patio or a deck? We recommend considering the following factors before you make a final decision:


Initial cost & resale value: Decks are usually more expensive to build than patios, but they offer a much higher return on investment if you ever sell your home. We suggest a patio if you're determined to have a new outdoor space but are working with a limited budget.

Maintenance: A deck, especially wood, requires significantly more maintenance than a patio. Wood decks must be power washed, recoated with paint or stain, and sealed every two years. Composite decks are easier to care for, but you should inspect them yearly to ensure their stability and safety. Patios that use concrete or stone are a much lower maintenance option. Even if a patio shifts or cracks over time, it's usually less expensive.

Construction Complexity: Building a deck will take more time than a patio and usually requires a building permit and periodic inspections. Most municipalities require a zoning permit to build a patio, which is less stringent.

Custom Deck Features to Consider

When you build a deck, there are very few limitations. You can add a roof and screened sides to offer protection from sun and pests. An outdoor bar or kitchen area and a centrally located fire pit or gas fireplace will make your deck extraordinarily comfortable and homey. Consider incorporating LED lighting and a ceiling fan to enjoy fresh air and all the comforts of the indoors simultaneously.

Multi-tier decking is an excellent solution for homes with a downhill slope in the back. It's often more practical and visually appealing to have several small areas instead of a single large deck.

Hardwood vs. Composite Material

We work with wood and Trex® Composite Wood. Both are excellent choices for decking, but each has pros and cons. Wood decks are more cost-efficient to construct and have the desirable appearance of natural hardwood, but they don't last as long as composite wood decking. Trex® Composite Wood is available in various colors that don't require staining or painting and won't warp or fade from moisture or sun exposure.

How Much Does a New Deck Cost?

The average national cost for a new deck is approximately $8,000, but your price will vary depending on the material you choose and the size of your deck. We charge $25 to $50 per square foot, which may not be the cheapest price, but our quality products, craftsmanship, and one-year warranty make a difference.
